Why Rental Insurance

Why is Rental Insurance so Important?

You may not even think about getting renters insurance when renting a home or apartment but it can the single most important insurance you will need.

If you rent a home the owner probably has homeowners insurance to cover the house and property, same with an apartment building, but that does not count in your personal property and belongings.

You can be covered if you loose your belongings in a flood, fire or theft. You also need insurance if a guest fell in your home and was injured.

Without renter's insurance, your personal  belongings wouldn't be replaced and you'd be liable for anyone who is injured inside your apartment or home.

If you don't think you have enough valuable personal property to protect with insurance and make the cost worthwhile, make a list of what you own. You may be surprised at what would be costly to replace: Clothing, furniture, a TV, computer, electronics, sports equipment or jewelry. Take a photo of each room and keep these in a safe place, or someone else's home.

When shopping for renter's insurance, also called apartment insurance, be sure you're covered for these "named perils," as they're called in insurance circles: Fire or lightning, windstorm, smoke, vandalism or malicious mischief, and theft or burglary.

Your renters insurance policy should also cover liability protection, which covers you if someone is injured on your property. You may also want additional coverage for legal defense in these matters, along with coverage for medical expenses of anyone who doesn't live with you but is injured in your home or apartment.
